Yuan Taste

Portugese Egg Tart

Awarded by Bee Keng Koh
Many of us are familiar with Portuguese egg tarts, but the ones I am familiar with are the Macanese variety that I used to drive all the way from my home city of Singapore to Malacca to get. There's a little shop in Malacca's Portuguese settlement that sells the best. The Macanese style is different to the pure Portuguese ones; they are not overly sweet and have a smoother, creamier custard. Since I moved to New Zealand more than 20 years ago, I have been yearning for this taste. Yuan Taste, with outlets in Mid City Mall, Atrium Shopping Centre and Dress Smart, comes closest (I sometimes think theirs is even better) and they get my vote for the egg tarts to be on the Iconic Auckland Eats list! I need to have them at least once or twice a week, and I know it's the same for many, especially Malaysians and Singaporeans.
