The Local

Snapper ‘n’ Chips

Awarded by Henri Smith
The dish I am nominating as an Iconic Auckland Eat is the ‘snapper n' chips’ from The Local on Waiheke Island. We are so lucky to have access to such delicious, locally caught fish and The Local prepares the freshest produce better than anyone else. Light and crispy beer battered snapper is paired with thick cut Makikihi chips and a zingy slaw which balances the dish beautifully. A real selling point for me is that The Local make all their condiments in house and are some of the best I have ever encountered. Their tartare is no exception and is the perfect accompaniment to the dish. It's not just the delicious food that makes this an iconic dish, but the experience that goes with it. Sitting on the deck overlooking the beautiful Oneroa Bay while enjoying a glass of local wine is what it's all about. The owners Simon and Sara are incredible hosts. Welcoming, attentive and always up for a laugh, they make us feel like we are one of the family when we come in for a meal. To me this dish is an elevated interpretation of the Kiwi classic while staying true to its roots and we will be back time and time again to enjoy it.
