The kumara grown at Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae in East Mangere.
They grow many vegetables at the marae, in a Māori ‘practice’ known as Hua Parakore - which is rooted in organics but so much more including kaitiakitanga (cultural and environmental sustainability). Their purple kumara are really special – but to be honest anything they grow is fabulous. You can find them on Sundays at Grey Lynn market and you can purchase one of their veggie boxes online for $25 at www.papatuanukukokirimarae.org/shop/
Steam your kumara, then roast and serve with kawakawa pesto!
